Getting Around Washington, D.C.

One of the best ways to experience Washington, DC is on foot. The city’s wide sidewalks meander past the inspiring monuments and museums found on the National Mall, as well as the intimate museums, world-class theaters and splendid gardens in the city’s collection of neighborhoods.

Washington, DC is surrounded by three major airports, Amtrak and a first-rate subway system, Metro. Metrorail and Metrobus are the most convenient ways to get around Washington, DC, with Metrobus providing connections for locations not serviced by Metrorail. The Walter E. Washington Convention Center even has a dedicated Metro station (Mount Vernon Square station) serviced by the Yellow and Green Lines, and many hotels are conveniently located near Metro stations or bus routes. Download the station map here.

Taxi and ride share services such as Uber and Lyft are also popular options for transportation around the city.

Airport Transporation

Reagan National Airport (DCA) is located just across the Potomac River in Virginia and is the closest airport to Washington, DC. Reagan National Airport has a variety of convenient transportation options for getting to and from the airport. For a low cost, passengers can get to any location on the Metrorail system from the Metrorail station connected to Terminal B/C. Other ground transportation options include shared ride services such as Uber and Lyft, taxis and rental cars.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is located 26 miles from Washington, DC in suburban Virginia. Dulles Airport has a variety of convenient transportation options for getting to and from the airport. For a low cost, passengers can get to any location on the Metrorail system by taking the non-stop Silver Line Express Bus from the Airport directly to the Wiehle Avenue Metrorail Station, located approximately 7 miles away.  Other ground transportation options include shared ride services such as Uber and Lyft, taxis and rental cars. For added convenience, individuals on their way to or from the Airport are allowed to drive on the low-traffic Dulles Access Highway, a 12-mile dedicated road extending toward Washington DC from the Airport to the Capital Beltway/495 and other points.

Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) is a bit further out in Baltimore, but oftentimes that means you can find even better flight deals.
