Lexology and International Law Office, together with ACC, hosted the ninth annual European Counsel Awards in London.
London, United Kingdom – Lexology and the International Law Office (ILO), together with the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), hosted the ninth annual European Counsel Awards at London's historic One Great George Street last night. The gala event celebrated the achievements of in-house counsel recognised by their peers as excelling in their chosen fields.
As Liz Walker, general counsel at BT Global Services, explained:
"The aim of the awards is simple – to find and recognise the best in-house lawyers based in Europe. The delivery of that aim is more challenging and requires looking behind the scenes in search of those attributes that really matter in the ever-changing corporate world."
To identify the winners, the research team conducted in-depth analysis of in-house lawyers and legal departments worldwide, receiving more than 4,500 nominations globally. Respondents were asked to focus on criteria such as effective communication, legal understanding, commercial awareness, depth and strength of team and management skills. The following awards were presented: Competition, Employment, General Commercial, Intellectual Property, Litigation, M&A, Regulatory (Financial and Non-financial), Rising Star and Compliance Innovator of the Year.
Markus Diethelm of UBS AG was named General Counsel of the Year after receiving multiple individual nominations from colleagues and partners at leading law firms. One respondent enthused:
"His in-person presence and ability to communicate and advocate effectively demonstrate the seriousness with which UBS takes the matters at hand, as well as Markus's personal commitment to the process."
The event sponsors were AAMM, Sociedade de Advogados, RL; Addleshaw Goddard LLP; Arthur Cox; Baker & McKenzie; Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP; Clifford Chance; Dentons; DLA Piper; Eversheds LLP; Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer; Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP; Gowling WLG International Limited; Lex Mundi; Paul Hastings LLP; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP; Squire Patton Boggs; and Van Bael & Bellis.
