The Australian Human Rights Commission is currently working to introduce an anti-racism framework and in late 2021, released a concept paper which provided an initial overview of the key principles. The intent of the framework is to provide guidance for the Australian community, including businesses and governments on how to effectively promote racial equality and reduce racism. You can learn more about the proposed framework here.
Recently, Lori Middlehurst and Kelly Xiao were fortunate enough to spend some time with Commissioner Tan, who talked about the importance of equality and the introduction of an anti-racism framework. The article in the ACC Docket includes some interesting insights and strategies for in-house counsel to assist in achieving equality, it’s well worth a read.
The DEI Committee has been following the development of the framework with great interest. With the support of ACC headquarters, the Committee was able to assist ACC Asia Pacific in writing to the Commission to formally express support for the principles, strategies and outcomes in the concept paper. We look forward to seeing how the planning and implementation of the framework unfolds.
