ACC St. LouisPlease join members of the ACCSTL Diversity and Inclusion Committee and Social Justice Coalition in celebrating Juneteenth at the unveiling of the Freedom Suits Memorial this Monday, June 20 at 5:00pm on the East plaza of the Civil Courts Building on 11th Street.
This memorial commemorates the work of hundreds of individuals who sued to obtain their freedom from slavery in the decades leading up to the Civil War. The memorial includes a visual depiction of these suits through a bronze sculpture created by Preston Jackson, African American artist and Professor Emeritus at School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and will also display the names of plaintiffs of the suits.
Speakers will include Lt. General Russel L. Honore, Mayor Tishaura Jones, Lynne Jackson (the great-great granddaughter of noted freedom suits plaintiffs Dred and Harriet Scott), United States Representative Cori Bush, Missouri State Senator Steven Roberts, and St. Louis Circuit City Judge the Honorable David C. Mason, who developed the concept for this memorial.
