Overview (Program Summary)

A program hosted by:

ACC Northeast

Concepts of accounting and finance pervade many areas where in-house lawyers are expected to provide their clients legal advice.  Having a working knowledge of foundational concepts of accounting and finance can inform and enhance the legal advice in-house counsel might offer like:

  • Financial disclosures;
  • Debt and equity finance;
  • Mergers and acquisitions;
  • Audits.

Many lawyers would find it helpful to better understand business finance and the jargon and acronyms attendant to financial discussions.

In this next installment of our Maine programming, Pierce Atwood lawyers, Ryan Kelley and Olga Goldberg, along with a BerryDunn accountant will team up to distill down and discuss core concepts of accounting and finance that in-house counsel should be familiar with, such as:

  • Form and substance of financial statements;
  • Recognition and components of revenue;
  • Key costs and drivers of profit;
  • Financial ratios;
  • Key performance indicators.

With the foundation laid, we will test your understanding in context by exploring multi-state tax issues that have relevance to any company whose business extends beyond its home state's borders and how those issues can impact a company's financial statements.  While we reinforce accounting and finance concepts, you will also learn to spot the activities that can create state and local tax exposure, including customers, employees, and inventory spread across state lines.

This in-person program is intended to be interactive and adaptive so, attendees are welcome to come equipped with any questions they may have and discrete topics within the broader scope of the program they wish to discuss.
