Empowering Our Health and Breaking Free from Unhelpful Habits

Patrick Krill, a leading expert on mental health, will begin with a discussion of what “well-being” means in the context of the legal field, followed by a brief review of his most current research on substance abuse, mental health, and well-being in the legal profession. He will highlight some of the potential costs and risks associated with untreated substance abuse and mental health problems, illustrate the stakes of this discussion, and focus on the importance of help-seeking and early intervention. In addition, Patrick will teach how to recognize a struggling colleague, why common warning signs are often missed, and how to approach and support someone who is in distress. He will also discuss the role of stigma and the crucial reasons to move beyond stereotypes and myths. Finally, Patrick will show attendees how they can assess their own risk level and make proactive lifestyle changes to better support their mental health and well-being.

Deftly Diverse: Communicating Across Cultures

It is easy to assume that someone who speaks differently from us is somehow the weaker communicator. In fact, we may be incorrect in our reading of cultural differences that intend to reflect a world of respect and confidence rather than weakness. This seminar summarizes the latest research on how members of collectivist and individualistic cultures can effectively communicate with one another and achieve greater understanding of each other’s cultural perspectives.

Ethical Considerations for the In-House Lawyer Acting as Business Advisor

A practical guide to fulfilling an in-house lawyer's professional obligations while protecting the company's legal interests. Questions addressed will include: What are the ethical implications for an in-house lawyer who is acting in a business, not legal, capacity? Do the rules of professional conduct apply to restrict a lawyer's conduct in their business capacity? How is the scope of attorney-client privilege affected by mixed legal/business roles?

Implicit Bias in the Workplace

This one-hour session will cover strategies for identifying and reducing implicit bias in the workplace by highlighting sources of unintentional bias, providing suggestions for minimizing microaggression and fostering inclusivity, and using real-life examples of effective performance feedback and management strategies.
