Decision Making Overview (8:30-8:45)
What is strategic decision making? Why is it important to study individual and organizational decision processes? What have we learned from breakthrough research in business management, behavioural economics and cognitive science?
Analytical Decision Making (8:45-9:30)
When making a business decision, it is prudent to understand the current state of the organization and the broader environment in which it operates. But there are risks with under- and over-analysis. How much analysis is necessary and sufficient?
Break (9:30-9:45) and Team Work (9:45-10:15)
Case Discussion (10:15-11:00)
In the first case study, an established organization is threatened by an upstart company with an innovative but buggy product. Through case discussion, we will analyze the company and its environment, and develop and debate the options.
Intuitive Decision Making (11:00-12:00)
Professionals and managers often talk about using judgment and intuition making strategic decisions. But what about the inherent biases in intuitive thinking? Can we blend the art and the science of decision making into a practical framework?
Lunch (12:00-13:00)
Group Decision Making Exercise (13:00-13:45)
Group decision making can be effective but at times frustrating. When done well, the process and outcome can be rewarding. Through a group exercise, we will experience the challenges and rewards of decision making in a group environment.
Organizational Decision Making (13:45-14:30)
Most organizations have formal decision processes in place, yet there are barriers and bottlenecks that can bog down these processes. Is there a way to significantly improve the efficiency and quality of organizational decision making?
Break (14:30-14:45) and Team Work (14:45-15:30)
Case Presentations (15:30-16:00)
In the second case study, a successful company has an opportunity to enter a growing but risky foreign market. But the management team lack consensus. Using the decision-making framework, teams will prepare and present their analyses and recommendations.
Prioritizing Decision Making (16:00-16:30)
Put simply, strategic decisions are about making choices. It is best to decide on things that matter most. Is there a simple way prioritize your challenges so you can focus on your most important decisions first?
