What do you do to maintain wellness, good mental health and balance in your life?
These times are unique for each and every person and we should be mindful every day that each individual is having a different experience to the other. One realisation that occurred to me early on is that everyday life doesn’t stop because we are experiencing a health and financial crisis - but that this crisis is on top of our already challenging lives and we are needing to adjust as we go and do the best we can.
What has stayed the same for me? There are a few things that I do that haven’t changed. I still walk my two dogs every morning, engage with neighbours (socially distanced, of course) and simply enjoy the fresh air. During my morning walk, I pay attention, notice nature and am not concerned about the to-do list for the day.
What has changed? If you had asked me pre-COVID what my guilty pleasures were, it would have been travel and photography. During COVID I have rediscovered the joy of LEGO. I had not played with LEGO since childhood, so, I started small with the Disney Castle at 4,080 pieces! I realised I had found that “flow state” activity that is a component of mental wellbeing and positive psychology as time just passed without me knowing. I have now “bricked my dogs” and am looking forward to building LEGO’s second biggest set. Find your flow activity and let your mind be free for a few hours.
