Annual Meeting 2006: Succession is an inherently unpleasant topic; no one likes to think of themselves as anything other than indispensable or to contemplate their own mortality. However, legal managers often fail to anticipate their own departure and plan for how the leadership of the legal department will continue in their absence. This can have serious repercussions on the effective functioning of a legal department; in dealing with regulators; and on morale in a legal department. This panel will focus on how to recruit, identify, and groom future legal managers, how to lead them into the skill sets that will enable them to maintain and grow a department, and engender the loyalty of their staff.
