To understand the driving forces behind the evolving role of the CLO and of corporate legal departments, the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) reached out to 9,600 indi- viduals. Survey results reflect data* from more than 1,200 individuals in 41 countries who serve as the organization’s chief legal officer or general counsel (referred to as the CLO in this report). From roles and responsibilities to salaries, skills and work environments, the study explored a broad range of topics.

Representing more than 1,200 CLOs and general counsel from 41 countries, the ACC Chief Legal Officers 2014 Survey provides an unbiased and in-depth analysis of the highest ranking lawyers in corporate legal departments—reviewing their top concerns for the past 12 months, today, and into the future, and a prioritization of their business issues.</p>
<p>As the largest global survey of CLOs, the report includes an executive summary, key findings, demographics, a profile of who is serving in the CLO role today, data reporting on staffing, budgeting and compensation, and a snapshot of law departments in a variety of settings. Notable findings identified in the report reflect trends in the areas of: </p>

<p>87% of respondents believe this to be an increasingly important issue for the CLO community and other legal professionals.</p>
<h3>Regulatory and Governmental Changes </h3>
<p>Eighty-three percent have named this as one of the leading challenges. </p>
<h3>Reducing Outside Legal Costs</h3>
<p>75% of respondents reported using some type of alternative fee arrangement (AFA) such as fixed fees.</p>
<h3>The Pro Bono Element</h3>
<p> This year's survey revealed that 95% of respondents do not have a formal pro bono program.</p></div>
