This article focuses on the changing role of in-house lawyers in Germany. In particular, it describes how fluctuating circumstances and challenges led to German companies increasing their focus on risk control and compliance.

The new focus has seen in-house counsel being on the frontline of efforts to introduce a more robust risk control system and in some cases, having more multifaceted roles for the companies they serve. Some in-house lawyers will serve more traditional roles, addressing legal issues specifically. In other cases, in-house lawyers consider themselves part of their company’s executive team, speaking on both legal and business matters.
