The legal industry is undergoing a seismic shift. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly emerging as a transformative force, reshaping the landscape of in-house legal departments. This report investigates the current state of GenAI adoption among in-house legal professionals, exploring the perceived benefits, challenges, and expectations for the future of in-house legal work and career paths.

Based on a survey of 475 in-house legal professionals in the United States, this report examines the extent to which GenAI is being utilized, and the impact it is having on legal work, in-house roles, and departmental readiness.

Our findings reveal a growing enthusiasm for GenAI among in-house legal professionals. Despite lingering concerns about data privacy, output quality, and company restrictions, a significant portion of legal teams are actively exploring and implementing AI tools. This shift is driven by the promise of increased efficiency, improved client service, and potential cost savings.

The insights from this research will empower individual legal professionals to leverage AI for career advancement and assist legal departments in developing effective AI strategies.
