Because cyber-attacks conducted by nation states are on the rise and becoming an increasingly commonplace method of “warfare” and diplomatic disruption, there is a need to invest in developing cyber capabilities (which many countries have already done).
Australia recently launched its Cyber security Strategy 2020, investing $1.67 billion over the next decade to bolster its cybersecurity apparatus. This piece highlights the international concerns over cyber-attacks, as they are the “new frontier” for warfare, while also underscoring the importance of Australia taking a leadership role internationally and strengthening its cyber defense with appropriate countermeasures, to avoid potentially catastrophic cyber-attacks in the future.
