Join the Intellectual Property Network and the Sports & Entertainment Law Network for a discussion with Scott Bearby, senior vice president and general counsel for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).  Prior to taking the role in January 2013, his career at the NCAA focused on media, intellectual property, and championship matters; he was lead NCAA inside counsel for all of the NCAA's television, digital and other multi-media agreements for the Division I Men's Basketball Championship and other NCAA championships since 1999.   In 2023, Mr. Bearby was appointed as an arbitrator within the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS), the international and Olympic sport dispute resolution organization. He has been an adjunct faculty member at both Indiana University McKinney School of Law and Indiana University Maurer School of Law, and is a member of the Indiana Sports Corporation Executive Committee and Board.  There will be time for questions, or you can send them in advance.

The panel will discuss common legal issues and risks that arise when reviewing marketing content, and share some best practices around limiting IP and personal rights infringement claims. There will be a focus on how to evaluate risks and when to consider obtaining formal clearances for music, photos, videos, and other common areas of concern (and when not to ask!) that arise when reviewing new advertising collateral and content. Learn how other practitioners approach clearing content, and hear some risk mitigation tips and along with traps for the unwary in-house counsel that supports the marketing team in their efforts.

Join us in March for a discussion with Jomarie Fredericks, Deputy General Counsel at Rotary International and the 2023 President of the International Trademarks Association.  We’ll speak to her both about her role overseeing the global protection of all of Rotary’s intellectual property, and in leading a global professional organization, including the challenges of being in-house counsel for an organization that includes all types of attorneys, and planning an annual meeting on the other side of the world.  You can read INTA’s announcement of her election here:  https://www.inta.org/news-and-press/press-releases/inta-elects-jomarie-fredericks-as-2023-president/  Ms. Fredericks was in private practice in Chicago, Illinois before joining Rotary in 1995, and in addition to her J.D. from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law Ms. Fredericks holds an LL.M. in Intellectual Property from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law (then the John Marshall Law School), where she now serves on its Advisory Board.  You can also learn what Rotarians do – and it’s not collect vintage telephones or design traffic-calming circles!
