After living through the pandemic and so many recent challenges, is it surprising that so many of us are seeking to redefine what “success” looks like and feels like in uniquely personal ways? For more than two decades, Veta Richardson has been helping professionals at all stages of their careers to voice their aspirations and pursue their goals. Her Amazon best-selling book,

Take Six: Essential Habits to Own Your Destiny, Overcome Challenges, and Unlock Opportunities unpacks the lessons shared with the hundreds of people she has mentored over the years. In addition to receiving a complimentary copy of this book through the generosity of our event host, Reed Smith, you’ll receive advice on how to shape and steer your career, inventory your skills, take credit for your achievements, and stand up for your values so that you feel prepared for any challenge―including the challenges of leadership in difficult times.

ACC-SoCal will be partnering with Loyola Project for the Innocent and hosting a Pro Bono CLE Event on Saturday, June 3rd from 12:00-4:00 p.m. at Loyola Law School, located at 922 Albany St, Los Angeles, CA 90015.

Loyola Project for the Innocent staff and volunteers, ACC attorneys, and law firm attorneys specializing in this area of law will join together in a day of service. The June 3, 2023, event will commence with a facilitated CLE training by Laurie L. Levenson, Professor of Law, David W. Burcham, Chair in Ethical Advocacy and Founder of Innocent Project, on how to screen innocence cases to find meritorious ones, followed by a hands-on review of hundreds of case files to determine which ones to pursue. By reviewing information provided by the prisoner, legal documents including appellate briefs and decisions, and evidence from the prisoner’s trial, and with the direction of LPI staff, we will, among other actions, determine what case files are proper to pursue.

At the conclusion of the June 3 event, ACC attorneys in attendance will then have the opportunity to continue their advocacy efforts and partner with Loyola Project for the Innocent staff and/or other law firm attorney specialists to take important next steps in the process for those identified who have been wrongfully convicted and where a claim of innocence is provable.

Please join Norton Rose Fulbright lawyers for a deep dive on contract drafting. We will unpack current best practices, including limitations on liability, indemnification, and other commonly overlooked but routinely problematic contract terms. We will also discuss the trends we are seeing in contract disputes in various sectors.

Many of us were attracted to the legal profession because we care about people and want to help them. Attorneys hopefully recognize that, unlike many other professionals, their lives are already filled to the brim with anxiety and stress. The consequences of shrugging it off can be catastrophic.  One of those consequences that we often hear about is burnout.  And then there’s a special type of burnout called “secondary traumatic stress” or “compassion fatigue”. The ramifications of trauma and compassion fatigue aren’t discussed as frequently as those of stress and burnout thus, for many attorneys, they are topics in need of attention.

Mr. Quinn will discuss:

  • The early warning signs of impairment, with special emphasis on stress, burnout, trauma and compassion fatigue
  • A close look at what barriers exist that prevent lawyers and judges from seeking the help they need will be provided
  • The role that education plays in breaking the stigma and fear associated with addiction and mental illness in the legal profession
  • How best to approach the impaired individual

ACC Southern California will be participating in the Justin Rudd Community Action Team Beach Cleanup to help create a clean and safe place for residents, visitors and aquatic wildlife – just in time for summer! As a co-sponsor, the day has been designated as Association of Corporate Counsel Southern California Day.

All ages – as well as dogs (at neighboring Rosie’s Dog Beach) - are welcome. So please feel free to bring your family and friends (human as well as canine) to volunteer with us! Meet at the ACC canopy, and feel free to stay longer to relax at the beach.

Trash bags, gloves, complimentary beachfront parking (kiosk code is JUS0617), door prizes and snacks/refreshments will be provided. Students will receive a one-hour volunteer service credit for their participation and Scouts can receive credit toward merit badges. Volunteers are asked to wear shoes and sunscreen.

BONUS ACTIVITY: For those interested in singing their heart out, a National Anthem Singing Contest will be held after the cleanup! Contestants may sign up at the event.

Please wear your ACC-SoCal shirt so we can easily locate you for our group photos and photos in action. If you don’t yet have one, shirts will be provided to members at the event. Please register as soon as possible so that we know how many shirts to have available.
