As lawyers and educators, Squire Patton Boggs labor and employment lawyers Carmen Cole and Katharine Liao know that proactive counsel on topics such as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is essential for avoiding disputes, as well as maintaining a positive and productive culture at work. This CLE program will not only tackle how to effectively identify and address bias in the workplace, from explicit to unconscious biases, but how to work toward solutions in light of the latest research and case law. Our session will do a deep dive on implicit biases, and emphasize the value of diversity, equity and inclusion at the workplace, while at the same time accounting for differences in communication, humor and management style for diverse teams.

“What am I doing here? I don’t belong.”

“I’m a total fraud and, sooner or later, everyone’s going to find out.”

Imposter syndrome, also called perceived fraudulence, involves feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite your education, experience, and accomplishments. While early studies focused on highly successful women, it is now clear that it can affect anyone in the legal profession – from law students to Big Law executives.

Living in constant fear of discovery, you strive for perfection in everything you do. You might feel guilty or worthless when you can’t achieve it, not to mention burned out and overwhelmed by your continued efforts. The results can be devastating.

True imposter feelings involve self-doubt, uncertainty about your talents and abilities. But what if you find yourself in an environment where your peers fail to make room for you or imply you don’t deserve your success? Along with the more traditional factors, gender bias and institutionalized racism can also play a significant part in imposter feelings. Even if only perceived, they can surely reinforce the feeling you don’t belong.

Hear our experienced speaker discuss the impact of the untimely death of his mentor and how trying to “fill his shoes” became more than a job, it took over his life. The consequences were a decades long effort to cope with and then conceal those feelings with alcohol and drugs.

Mr. Quinn will discuss:

I.      Imposter Syndrome: What Is It?

II.     Impacts of Imposter Syndrome on Attorneys and our ability to uphold the Rules

        of professional Conduct

III     The Role of Gender and Racial Bias in Creating Imposter Syndrome

IV.    Practical Guidance for Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

V.     How to Support Attorneys Battling Imposter Syndrome

VI.    The confidential, safe, free, and supportive resources available through

         lawyers assistance programs

VII.   Personal Experience of Struggling with Imposter Syndrome

Recent years have seen a record number of severe weather events, including wildfires, winter storms, hurricanes, and floods. Navigating the insurance claim process can be daunting even for the most sophisticated commercial policyholders. This program will provide in-house counsel with the keys to avoiding common property insurance coverage pitfalls associated with natural disaster insurance claims.

Whether clients are facing regulatory obligations, e-discovery and other litigation costs, privacy risk, or increasing cyber threats, the financial and reputational impact of keeping legacy data and paper documents beyond their operational life has hit a point of critical mass. In this program, our experts will discuss the ethical obligations attorneys have to counsel their clients on effective data retention and disposition in order to comply with the duties of competency, confidentiality, expedition, candor, and fairness.

Please join us for our annual Labor & Employment Summit. Thanks to our sponsors, we're pleased to present an informative and engaging day-long CLE program.

More details about the program will be coming soon!

ACC-SoCal will be participating virtually in Baker McKenzie’s 9th Annual Children’s Rights Summit, hosted by Salesforce. The Children’s Rights Summit brings together disciplines and talent from across the legal community to envision and reimagine what justice for children could look like. We will take action to serve and to hone skills of those advocating for children so that we may better serve youth in our communities, empower young people to understand their rights, and work to ensure that our justice systems help realize their rights.

The deadline to register is December 9th. You can register for either or both these portions of the summit:

  • Speaker Portion (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM PST) – Former youth with first-hand experience in our justice systems, along with advocates, will share their stories. Experts will lead discussions about how we can all contribute to meet the needs of children in our communities.

  • Justice in Action: Rights Relay (2:00 PM – 4:00 PM PST) – In-house counsel, children’s rights advocates, law firm lawyers, and technology experts engage in discussions about the legal needs of vulnerable children. Joined by youth who have survived our legal system, we will work together to find rights-based solutions to bridge the social gap that envelop these children and their communities.

The 2022 midterm elections have proven to be nothing short of historic as Republicans took the House by a historically thin margin and Democrats maintained control of the Senate. As the country grapples with a looming recession, record inflation, sharply higher interest rates, hot and cold foreign wars and the Dobbs Supreme Court ruling, Democrats managed to escape the precedent of losing a large number of seats in a president’s first midterm. So, how will the next two years shape up?

Please join distinguished members of Akin Gump’s policy practice—each with significant U.S. government experience and with differing perspectives from both sides of the aisle—to discuss the razor-thin margins in Congress and potential consequences for the legislative agenda (such as fiscal cliffs, government shutdowns, the privacy debate and trade) as well as their thoughts on a 2024 presidential primary race already underway and how all of this will impact getting any deals done. A cocktail and networking reception will follow on the club’s outdoor patio.

Complimentary valet parking will be provided.
