ACC South Carolina Spotlight: 2024-25 Chapter President
Monique Brown
Global Data Protection Officer - Head of Global Privacy & Corporate Risk, Greystar
When did you “go in-house,” and what prompted your decision?
My husband is a retired naval officer. While he was active duty, our family relocated several times for his position. Being in-house allowed me the ability to practice in jurisdictions where I did not have a bar license (I am licensed SC & AL). When we relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, in 2010, I started working with FIS, a financial technology company, as Corporate Counsel, Privacy. This was a new practice area for me, and I fell in love with it. I been able to work in this practice area for almost 15 years at various companies in various locations.
Have you had any strong mentors in your career? What did they teach you?
Through the years I have had several strong mentors. My first job after graduating from law school was as a law clerk for Judge Daniel E. Martin, Sr., a South Carolina Circuit Court judge. I learned so much about the practice of law – advocacy, fairness, accountability, kindness and respect.
Aside from the law, what professions are interesting to you?
Teaching. Early in my career I have taught Paralegal Studies at Trident Technical College. Later in my career I was an Adjunct Professor at Florida Coastal School of Law teaching Transactional Drafting.
What are the most difficult and rewarding aspects of being an in-house counsel?
Dealing with different personalities and managing various projects with competing deadlines. Being able to assist others and provide valuable advice and creative solutions is rewarding.
What key advice would you give to new in-house lawyers or those contemplating going in house?
Try to learn all aspects of the business and become a trusted advisor to the stakeholders. Only say “no” if there are no other solutions to the problem.
Are you an “early bird” or “night owl?”
Definitely an early bird – the early bird gets the worm.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
Traveling, playing tennis and spending time with family and friends.
How long have you been an ACC member, and what is your favorite part about it?
I have been a member since 2010. I love ACC – wonderful networking and the great programming and events!
