A team of Polsinelli Intellectual Property attorneys now wear a new hat – inventors – similar to the clients they represent every day. Inspired by a desire to maximize efficiency and focus on areas that benefit the most from their time, they saw a need in the patent drafting process and decided to fill it.

Patent applications are time consuming. They require meticulous attention to detail. Manual input of this information is time consuming and does not enhance the application. Although automated patent drafting tools assist in these tasks, they are only suitable for simple claims and are not user friendly. That’s exactly what our team aimed to improve with the development of PatentCAD. The PatentCAD working group used their collective years of experience to design, build and implement this Artificial Intelligence tool that maximizes efficiency and elevates client service.  In this presentation we will demo the tool and its impact to the patent industry.

Copyright is King: Critical Lessons and Best Practices

When many of us hear of “copyright protection,” our thoughts turn to music and manuscripts.  Yet copyright law is much more expansive and underutilized by almost all industries.  At its core, copyright law allows authors of an original work to obtain legal protection and exclusive rights over their creations.  But it’s not just for those seeking to entertain or educate.  Copyright can be obtained on household items, clothing, toys, tools or any tangible item having a degree of creativity.  From the subject matter categories set forth in 17 USC Sec. 102 to specific applications, copyright enjoys strong protection in the United States and further includes the rights and protections, for example, provided by the relatively new Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).  The DMCA provides a whole basket of rights, including the often overlooked rights afforded by using Copyright Management Information (CMI). Join Armstrong Teasdale Partner, Ted Behm, and LifeScan Global Corporation Legal Counsel, Teena Amador, as they discuss critical copyright lessons and powerful best practices for leveraging additional protections with CMI.

The global pandemic of 2020 brought an extraordinary shift in the online marketplace. Companies doing business online need to focus more than ever on protecting and maximizing the value of their intellectual property. This session will guide participants through a shift in mindset in online IP. We will discuss the infrastructure of the online marketplace, how to extract the most value from online channels, why you should be thinking about global IP protection, what impact the change in government leadership may have on intellectual property law and how your IP counsel can help to drive value in your organization’s intellectual property strategy and management.

Siegmar Pohl and Paul Haughey of Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP

Investing in, acquiring, or partnering with companies requires a due diligence investigation in which intellectual property (IP) will play a role. This article, from a primarily United States perspective, describes four levels of due diligence review, and the level of review warranted by different types of transactions. For efficiency, key questions upfront can focus the review.
