Professional resources to assist intellectual property ("IP") specialists in the day-to-day aspects of IP practice and "prosecution"--for instance, the identification of patentable "inventions", or the nuances of patent and trademark application work before the United States Patent and Trademark Office ("U.S.P.T.O") and equivalent international agencies--is very well covered, even for in-house counsel, by other associations; we will gladly refer you to them if needed.
What the New York City Chapter's IP Practice Group seeks to address are the needs of in-house counsel tasked with functional, practical management of the business and commercial aspects involving IP. IP PG events are not "cookie cutter": we want to explore the varied "intersections" between IP and business and other substantive areas of law while giving our Members practical approaches for enhancing their business careers. Our IP PG will benefit a wide audience ranging from legal generalists with some IP issues within the scope of their practices, to IP specialists themselves whose practices support more generalist areas, such as M&A, business development, or licensing. Previous topics for the Group have ranged from: managing the risk to corporate IP stemming from the "explosion" of social media; an "Ethics Quiz Show" where we explored a host of compelling ethics questions posed to IP practitioners in day to day practice; and learning about the boundaries of copyright law principles applicable to the music industry by "experiencing" an interactive jazz presentation that expressed those principles for us.
The New York City Chapter's 2023 IP Practice Group Sponsor is Cowan Liebowitz and Latman, P.C. Please check the main ACC-NYC Website for future rewarding IPPG programs.
As always, we'd love to hear from you on any topics that you would like to see covered by the IPPG. We'd also like to invite you to get involved with IPPG. Like any of ACC-NYC's Practice and Affinity Groups, the IPPG is a great way to meet fellow in-house colleagues, share ideas and best practices, advance your career—and most importantly, make new friends with folks that, like you, have chosen to make in-house work the career path of choice.
